I have noticed that in unwanted cameras, unique sensors help to focus automatically. The sensors with some camcorders change in contrast, while others use a beam associated with infra-red (IR) light, especially in low light. Higher spec cameras occasionally use a mixture of both techniques and could have Face Priority AF where the photographic camera can ‘See’ some sort of face and focus only on that.
